First of all, I have to say, I still love myself despite this speech not being perfect. But I’m breathing big, because this is the speech I made for the day, and I’ll keep working at it, and sharing with you along the way.
Transcript: Hey folks I'm Josh Race and I'm a coach. I coach one on one small groups and also workshops. No matter the format we're always using breath repetitions as a way to get grounded in our bodies and notice any sensations we're feeling, emotions that we're feeling, and also to catch any thoughts, especially the big bad judge.
Now let me give you an example. So I like to drive a somewhat sporty car. I used to have a Dodge Durango with a hemi engine in it a little bit bigger engine. The thing drove so nice down the highway. And I'd be driving up towards Jacksonville near where I live. And often just be in the passing lane because I was going a little faster than everyone else. And there would be someone driving in the passing lane at a low rate at a slow speed. I'd like get mad…pass them, you know go around. And then there'd be someone else just cruising in the passing lane And I'd start to get so mad. "What are these people doing? I'm gonna make it my life's purpose, to teach these people how dumb they are for driving in or just cruising in the passing lane."
Yeah…We judge other people…Or here here's another one…Around where I live there's a Publix grocery store on almost every corner, a Firehouse Subs a Starbucks. Every little mall is the same thing. It's ridiculous there's no culture. Right? We judge our circumstances…
Or you know what just this morning, I was fixing this shoe. The sole was coming off I got the super glue out, and I'm gluing that thing on And I told myself, "Be careful, don't get any super glue glue...... Ah, got super glue on my fingers …" That stuff doesn't come off very well You can't just like wash it off. You gotta wait for like three or four days for the skin to kind of like fall off For the super glue to go away. I hate myself. Like when am I gonna learn to get…to not get super glue on my fingers…You see, we also judge ourselves. We hate on ourselves for really minor things…
This is why we do breath repetitions…To catch the big bad judge. Now you have a nose on your head. Imagine you also had a nose in your heart…And a nose in your stomach. And you could breathe through all three noses at the same time…Feeling the air, feel your chest…The temperature nice and cool coming in through your nose…and nice and warm coming out of your nose…We can remember to do this by…touch…Maybe we touch something on the car dashboard, remember to breathe. Remembering to breathe gives yourself the opportunity…to catch the negative judge…
When you catch the judge, you have the opportunity to inquire to explore what's really going on here. “Is it true…that people should drive faster…in the passing lane?” Maybe. “Is it true that I should make up my life's purpose to teach them how dumb they are?” No. “Is it true I should hate on myself for getting superglue on my fingers?Hey folks I'm Josh Race and I'm a coach. This inquiry…is a power, a Sage power…called Exploring. We're exploring what else could be true besides that one perspective that seemed like we definitely had it right.
What if we can also find there's other truths out there?
There are five Sage powers. The Explore power, being curious of self, others, and circumstances. There's Empathy and Navigation. Imagine meeting an elder wiser version of yourself…that you could ask, "What's really important right now? What's NOT important right now?"
And then the Innovate power is to come up with ideas really quickly without judging whether or not they're good ideas. They're just ideas. Throwing ideas in the bucket really quickly improving some fun ideas. "What would it be like to drive sixty miles an hour? What would it be like to drive the minimum speed limit? Maybe I could drive just behind the other person no matter their speed. What if I put it on automatic cruise control? What if I wore a glove when I used super glue? What if I'd never used super glue ever again? These are just ideas. We're just throwing ideas in the bucket.
Innovating is the Sage power. Then we have Activation. Activation is to sit back a moment and ask yourself, "which of those ideas was actually really good?" And then take some steps…to put it into action. So I invite you to try three noses. Breathing through your nose (head), your nose (heart), your nose(stomach), all at the same time.
Be aware of your body, catch the thoughts, spin it around into sage perspective…Let's win. Let's have fun working. Let's have great relationships. Let's take care of ourselves.
