Remember Where You Need to Be
Nail down what you "want to want" and you might get there more often
Last week I had an inspiring call where I was coached around my wish to work in a more optimized way. One of the nuggets that came from the session was my realizing how there are certain places where I "want to want" to be. Yes… “want to want” … because even though I often enjoy being in these productive places, there can be real discomfort just getting into position.
For example, making art in my garage studio sounds great, but getting myself there is hard when I have an anxious feeling in my stomach just thinking about it. I end up pulling weeds in the driveway again. But when I do get to the studio - I feel pride for having a studio at all, for making stuff, and helping others tap into their creativity. And just making simple marks I feel a sense of accomplishment.
The same goes for making little videos and writing blog posts. I know I focus best at my desk in my home office, with the door closed and natural light streaming in. But getting there can be tough! My outdoor couch often feels way more inviting, and I end up scrolling through my phone instead of tackling my to-do list. But once I'm at my desk, I get so much more done, and again, I feel a sense of accomplishment.
To help me overcome this inertia, I decided to create a little book for myself. I haven’t completed it yet, but I have this draft started, which I’ll share with you now.
This is a zine style flip book. Click on the image to open up a new tab.
In the booklet there are placeholder line drawings for inspiring my "want to want" places, and a few inspirational words for me to easily recall where I need to be.
I’m keeping this book on my table, where I’ll see it multiple times a day. It's a constant reminder of where I want to be and why.
I want to be in front of the canvas because at the end of the day, I enjoy looking at the art I have made.
I want to be in front of the keyboard because at the end of the day, I feel satisfaction knowing I’ve shared something that will make a difference for someone.
I want to be in front of the gym mirror because when i get there, I end up feeling great and stop worrying about not taking care of my health. A short amount of time pays off in huge dividends.
Will being more intentional about getting to my preferred workspaces work? Time will tell.
What about you? Are there places where you "want to want" to be? What helps you get there? I'd love to hear your thoughts!"
